Barbara is an expert in the area of non-fiction book writing. During her educational career, she earned an Associate's Degree from Stephens College in 1965 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Kentucky in 1970.

Barbara is a member of the National Association of Professional Women and Enterprise Reporting. She is also a Sigma Delta Chi alumnus. Barbara was the recipient of two awards for Enterprises Reading from Kentucky Press in 1983 and 1984.
